Why is Texas Health Institute working diligently to implement the Benefit Bank of Texas?
Texas Health Institute’s President/CEO, Camille D. Miller says, “The recession hit Texas hard, and our families need all the help they can get.”  “For every dollar Texans pay in federal taxes, we get 70 cents back, while Texas has 10% of the nation’s poverty population. Texans need to claim these benefits.” Texas has more hungry children than any other state in the country, with the exception of Arkansas.

Each year thousands of families in Texas do not claim an estimated $6.1 billion in federal work supports in the form of food assistance, tax credits, public benefits, and student financial aid. Work Supports increase employment, education, and back-to-work success rates, while reducing poverty, hunger, homelessness, and recidivism.

When families claim work supports, they spend those dollars in their local communities, boosting economic recovery through a multiplier effect. For example, the federal government pays 100% of all SNAP benefits. Every $5 in SNAP generates $9.20 in local economic activity.
   1.7 million Texas residents miss out on $2.4 billion in SNAP.
   Less than 1 in 10 Texas households eligible for SNAP, Earned Income Tax Credit, health insurance and childcare subsidies claim all
four assistance programs.
   Of the $6.1 billion not claimed in Texas, 89% are federal funds.

Firmly believing that tackling poverty, hunger, and unemployment in Texas will require all Texans working together, THI launched TBB-TX as a great example of how a public-private partnership can achieve tangible results. The Benefit Bank has already helped thousands in other states claim millions of dollars worth of tax credits and other benefits. Most of these funds are federal dollars that, when spent in local communities, boost local economies. But, more importantly, it has helped hungry children be fed, working moms and dads get by, and assisted young people in getting into college. What a worthwhile venture!
